Morning thoughts

* On my way into work this morning, 'Maneater' by Hall and Oates came on the radio. For some strange reason, I flashbacked to when I was 13 and purchasing those teen magazines like Bop or 16. I bought them because there was usually posters of Duran Duran in them which I would then tear out and tape up to my wall but I remember also seeing Hall and Oates pictures. Was there ever a 12-15 year old girl that had her room covered in Hall and Oates posters? At the advanced age of 36, I can now see that they are decent looking fellows but they still don't seem worthy of hanging on your wall with some Scotch tape.

* On my way into work on Monday, one of the churches that I passed had all their inside lights on. Since I go this way at least 3 out of 5 days, I was wondering what was up. This morning, all was dark again and I reflected on the word 'sanctuary' as some churches refer to their main area where all the action happens (other than the church basement and the fellowship coffee hour with 6 unique egg casseroles that usually comes afterwards) and it's definition. Can a criminal still hide there and be free from arrest? Do people who actually work there find it a 'refuge' or is it just their place of employment? Just some things I wondered.

* Yesterday was the big vote in our city on whether to have a city income tax or not. I got up early this morning to check on the verdict. 67% voted for no. The percentage sounds pretty impressive until you break it down a bit: In a city of 22,000, there are only 12,475 registered voters of which 3,336 actually voted yesterday. Out of the 3,336 voters, nearly 750 voted absentee. So that means in a city where only 57% of the people are registered voters, only 21% of those registered voters made a point of taking 10 minutes out of their day between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. to vote on a pretty significant issue. While I admit to not being the gung ho 'One person can make a difference' kind of girl, these statistics are pretty depressing. I remember my mom and dad always made a point of going out to vote so perhaps that became ingrained in me where as others view it as not so important. With that said, I'm not sure what I will be doing come next November. Depending on the two choices, maybe sitting out isn't a bad idea.

did you find out what was going on in the church and why are you wondering about "Sanctuary?" Do you need a place to hide out?

Sage - To find out I would probably have to attend since I don't know a member of that church that is still alive so instead of going, I'll assume maybe it was a janitor. ;-) Currently, I don't need a place to hide out but I always like to have various Plan B's in place, just in case.

I'm guessing this time next year, the percentage number will be a lot higher. We had only 18% turnout in our fair city.

Most people feel their votes have little impact especially if you're frequently in the miniority. Also many times people don't vote because they don't know anything about the people running for office especially in off year elections like this one.
