Things that make me go "Hmmm..."

While watching the odd human being that is Lestor Holt on Saturday's "Today" show, there was a bit about a British Airways Boeing 777 that had crash-landed at Heathrow airport on Thursday. During the news snippet, the person mentioned that a possible cause was a bird strike. A 5 lb bird can take down a 803,000 lb. airplane?!? With all the new planes being built that are larger, 3 levels of seating, more leg room, a real bar, why isn't protection from a 5 lb. bird not addressed?

Five pounds being hurled at you at almost 200 miles per hour sounds like a lot to me. I think I'd rather not hit one.

The Boeing at Heathrow was (so far) simply an engine failure, but bird strikes have been the subject of research since the dawn of aviation. The US even has a pneumatic gun for shooting frozen birds (for aerodynamic research) that they call the "Rooster Booster". I know it seems a bit much that a bird could wreck an engine that's six-feet in diameter, but they can. And they can also go through a window or canopy and take out a pilot.
