Stepping back in time

When I met Big A, he didn't have cable nor did he have rabbit ears for his TV. The only thing that he watched on his TV were movies on DVD. The fact that we are now paying over $100 just to watch TV (half of that is the cable modem though) burns his butt. A couple of weeks ago, he brought up an idea: we go one month without watching TV. I can't say that the idea didn't scare me at first and even now it still slightly frightens me. I just keep telling myself that we have radios and I get a daily newspaper so I won't be behind in the news. People magazine comes weekly so I won't be behind on my entertainment industry gossip. I can go to the Food Network web page to see recipes. I think he even included DVD movie watching on his one month ban which surprised me.

Thanks to my love of Big Brother 8, the first month that this would be doable is October. It should be interesting.

I lived for twenty years without a television. Piece of cake.

When we bought our house, we dropped all but basic cable of just the local channels and two or three others. We also switched from cable modem to a local high speed over the phone service. The result, we save about $60/month over what we used to pay through Mediacon. (And yes, the spelling was intentional.)

The fact that I could end up more like you after not having TV frightens me. :-)

Murf, as I've said before, from my mid-20s through my mid-30s I went without a TV. If I wanted to watch a movie on video, I had to make sure I was dating a girl with a recorder and TV, if I wanted to watch sports, I went to a bar...

Good grief. You too? I can see myself turning into a hiker and a camper when this little experiment is over.
