Last night's episode felt more like the medical procedure that goes by the same acronym than the Democratic National Convention of earlier in the week. While I couldn't stay awake to see my beloved Joe Biden, I did happen to catch the roll call as they came to Michigan and what an embarrassment that was. All the other states up until that point would proclaim something proud and good about it. A good example was New Jersey. They were proud that the sun comes up over the water and sets over their green meadow and it was also the home of Bon Jovi. Whoever spoke for our state just went on and on about the loss of jobs and other more negative aspects of the state currently. No mention of our connection to the Great Lakes. No mention of the differences in landscape from the hills in the north to the flats of the south. No mention of it being the home of Madonna and Kid Rock if they wanted to inject some pop culture. Not one good word was said. Whomever wrote this needs to be exiled to Ohio.
It was fun watching Bill Clinton getting ticked that the standing ovation was cutting into his speech time. I also had to cringe whenever the military history of his reign was mentioned in glowing terms. Hello? Anyone remember Blackhawk Down?
On an interesting note, recently Michigan approved tax cuts in order to bring the movie makers in Hollywood here (a.k.a. Michigan Film Incentive). The first well-known taker - Drew Barrymore and her production company. This week they are in my city doing some filming for her movie about womens roller derby. I haven't heard where but I think I spotted the area since it wasn't that hard to miss what with the police blocking the street and the large amount of trailers and trucks across the street in the parking lot of a Baptist church.

Gosh, good thing I live in Iowa. Our cornfields sound more exciting than Michigan's problems. Yawn....
I've always found cornfields to be rather exciting, Ed. ;-)
I just got back from Ludington (a quick 2 night get away), which reminds me that Michigan is one state that you can watch the sun rise and set over water!
So is Barrymore's film a remake of the Raquel Welch movie about rollerderby that was made in the 70's?
Sage - Judging from the negativity of the roll call, if that was mentioned, she would also have included a gripe about the 4+ hour drive from coast to coast to see it rise and set.
Carl - From what I gather, I don't believe so. In Drew's version, the main character is a beauty pageant winner that wants to go into roller derby. In Raquel's movie, it sounds more like a housewife that dreams of roller derby. I'll have to Netflix this Golden Globe nominated movie.
D&C, not DNC.
