Homemade vs store bought

Ever since the whole debacle with Chinese products started with dog food, I've been searching the internet for information on cooking for Hooch rather than relying on the dry food purchased in a grocery store. There's a lot of information out there but there is also a lot of perhaps important information that changes from source to source. Take garlic, for example. Some receipes include garlic. Other websites say that garlic is bad for dogs.

A few months ago, I subscribed to the Whole Dog Journal in the midst of their continuing main topic which was how to cook for your dog. Around this same time, we noticed Hooch's lump growing and the first issue that I received included a bit about fatty tumors which are common in older dogs and, according to them, could be a result of eating the dry, store bought food which has a lot more carbs than dogs need since dogs are carnivores. There were people who said that their dogs benign tumor stopped growing or decreased in size when they switched to a homemade meat/rice/veggie/vitamin supplement meal. I don't think it would be too hard cooking for him since it's basically what Big A and I eat. Yet just this weekend, I read an article that was written by a vet who said that dogs need a myriad of vitamins and that you can overlook all of their nutritional needs by cooking for them. All of their requirements are met with the food you purchase at the grocery store.

It's enough to give two legged creatures a headache.

Ted had an unlimited pork buffet just up the road a bit from all the dead hogs waiting for the rendering truck to come. He still got several fat tumors. He also had a lot of worms all the time so maybe that played into it. I went through wormer like it was going out of style.

A few months ago, Diane had a blog about cooking for her dogs (she prepares a big pot for them). I've done some cooking for Trisket--he loves it--and it's my way of using out of date meat, combining it with rice and vegetables and he thinks it's the greatest thing in the world. He still gets some regular dog food too.
