This article took me back. I remember kind of liking the Merkur and the Citation back in the day. Not the same extent as I loved the Chevette though or the Le Car. I guess those were never Car of the Years.
Quote from the article: "The Alliance proved that Wisconsin workers could assemble a Renault with the same indifference to quality that was a hallmark of French automobile industry."
I drove an '83 Renault Alliance (It was a business car--leased by the scouts when I worked for them, so I didn't personally own it). At first, I liked it, it looked like an Audi, but cost a lot less... then the problems started...
Never have driven any of those cars directly though I did learn to drive on the Ford Pinto which evidently was the base for the Mustang II.
The big three cars that I have driven over the years as rentals all feel clunky compared to the feel of my beloved Hondas or Toyotas so I've never had the desire to buy one.

On a serious note...
We had a Citation. And we had a wreck in said Citation. One and a half flips.
My mother swears to this day something happened to the steering.
