Tripod

A couple of weekends ago, Hooch injured his ankle somehow. It wasn't an event which produced a yelp but it was one big enough for his ankle to be swollen and his steadfast refusal to put any weight on it which was our sign. We guess that it could have been while going up the basement steps. He tends to run up them and lately, his back legs have been known to give out on him during so he could have landed on it wrong.

Last week, he went to the vet for it and after a muzzle and some hogtying to get an x-ray, it's just sprained and we left with a few anti-inflammatories to give him over the next 8 days. Since then, nothing has changed. It's still swollen and while he drops it enough to rest his tippy toes on the ground when standing still (as shown in the photo), that's as close as he gets to using it. The first few days he adjusted to it but now he bounces around as if it's nothing. We don't treat him any different so he can't be faking it for things like lying on the couch because he gets to do that anyway.

So the pills have come to an end and it looks like nothing has changed. To quote what the nice vet said, I guess he will know when it's no longer sore and will begin to use it again. Until then, I will enjoy not feeling guilty for not walking him and enjoy the downtime...while still watching him closely and wishing it would heal so that I can go back to thinking that he will live forever.

Sidenote: Every year after Christmas, I take the cedar roping used in the front of the house and leave a piece for Hooch as a sort of urination treat from the usual snow pile (the yellow in the photo was pre-cedar roping and note the three point stance he's rocking). Aren't I a good mother?

I can't remember a single time when Ted was a tripod. He had the whole body arthritis, numerous throat surgeries, etc, but never a tripod instance. I'm wondering what were the odds of that every happening especially since he was a free range dog?

Hope Hooch heals up soon.

Throat surgeries?!? Poor guy. I'm glad he made it as long as he did then.

I've noticed my dog seems to be experiencing some back leg problems--I may have to do a post on shoveling a snow path to the locust tree--now he's stopped creating all the yellow snow just off the porch.

With all the snow we've had, it might be easier to just buy some cedar roping. :-)
