Plan B has begun

Last night, I started on Part III of the continuing saga that is known as me and school. When a certain Big 10 school didn't want me and after being poopy about it for a few weeks and then doing a bit of research, I came up with a Plan B - get a Technical Writing certification from the nearby community college. I did this a few years ago with web design. I hope to actually use this one though.

The summer class that I have is basically Intro to Microsoft Word 2003. Advanced Word is one of the required classes but I decided to take this optional one just to brush up on stuff like the names of the parts of the screen - tool bar, menu bar, title bar, text area - and it covers the page breaks and section breaks and page numbering which actually is harder than it sounds...or maybe it's just me. Supposedly this book is also used in the class that I will have in the fall semester but during the class last night, one of the other 10 students there mentioned about having heard that the classes were changing to Word 2007 then. I didn't give it much thought until I went to buy the book today from the campus bookstore and saw how much it was. I stood there dumbfounded for about 3 minutes, making sure it was the right book. It was. $82.50! Sure it's kind of thick but it's thick because the font is so big as are the screenshots but it does have a decent coil binder used on it (and I know about binding books with these things but you won't see that on my resume). I had forgotten that campus bookstores are sort of like Snake Eater's image of the gas companies. Just an F.Y.I - there won't be a book review done on this one.

Section breaks and page numbering are easy. Figuring out how to unlock the default snap grid when adding arrows to graphics embedded in a word document was a bit more difficult.

How about creating a table of contents that updates as you are typing further in the document, smarty pants?

That's easy. You just insert it and right click over it and select update whenever you want. You can also update the entire field or just page number only. NEXT!

I'm a self taught smarty pants by the way.

You're missing some steps I think there, buddy.

They were pretty basic steps that anyone would probably know. Maybe I shouldn't assume that. ;)

You're going to have to stop this antagonistic attitude when we live together, Ed. :-)

Come on Murf, we got Ed's DamYankee Reading Challenge now going why not have Murf's Technical Books Readling Challenging also?

That would be amusing to see if Ed would dig out one of his old engineering textbooks to reread.

You would be making a big assumption that I read them the first time.

I was always a big believer in good notes during class. The books were mostly used for doorstops.

See, I was the opposite. I would rather have skipped the class and just read the book.
